History of the Village Potter

The Village Potter began one sunny fall weekend in 2001. Friends were invited to drop by our very small showroom for a two-day pottery sale. The positive response encouraged me to open a studio the following summer.

I studied ceramics at Haliburton School of Fine Arts and Canadore College. In those institutions I had the privilege to learn from established potters. Ron Roy shared his wealth of glaze technology in an intensive course. Steve Hill's course concentrated on form and function, as well he offered practical advice on setting up and running a studio. These are just two of the teachers whom I not only enjoyed immensely, but from whom I learned valuable technical skills.

In 1999 we built a wood fueled down draft kiln. It is 27 cubic feet in size and takes about 1 cord of wood to fire. The challenge was not in actually building the kiln, but in learning to fire it to stoneware temperatures.

The Village Potter now offers over 65 designs in five different glazes. I enjoy the routine of making repeat ware but I am also interested in interpreting customer's ideas. I have made baptismal bowls, custom wedding gifts, and pet urns. Occasionally a custom item becomes part of our production line. Apple bakers and egg cups are examples of that.

The atmosphere in my studio is welcoming, so drop by for a visit sometime.
